Children spent the week investigating how much food waste was being thrown away by all children, comparing that thrown away by older children and younger children. They also looked at how children were recycling waste food and packaging and how successful this was. This was linked to health eating week and how it is important to eat healthy portions and not take too much and then waste it. In particular, the children discussed 5 aday of fruit and vegetables and how they should try to eat some rather than binning them.
Activity description
Everyone in your school needs to do their bit (or bite!) to tackle food waste. Hold an assembly to share the key facts about food waste and the main messages of what this means for your school.
Think carefully about who you want to hear your message. You might want to invite school governors, parents or dinner staff in or invite them to participate in your assembly.
